Gabrielle's mixed emotions about becoming a mother and the heartaches and the subsequent episodes about their to become parents filled the whole season and provided Longoria plenty of opportunity to prove that she had comedic chops that equaled her hottie physique. Huffman is a super actress and she can wring a huge laugh from a blank stare as she does in one scene involving a subordinate who can't fill a request to speak to a woman because he's already hit on her.
She also makes some odd mistakes that feel like she's been taking screw-up lessons from Susan. (Yawn.) When Tom joins her firm, their battle of the sexes/who's the boss tensions are undercut by him being written as an overgrown boy who becomes a fifth child she needs to shepherd along. Cross' performance ably expressed the travails of a women who was always about maintaining appearances, but whose life continued to collapse behind the facade.Lynette's return to the shark-infested corporate advertising world is marked by the need to balance managing child care and career - the age-old "mommy track" dilemma. Eventually she would have serio-comic drinking problems and trouble from both of her unappreciative children, the worst coming from her sociopath son, Andrew (Shawn Pyfrom). With the soapy landscape established, the second season gallops off in several directions at once with Bree rebounding from Rex's death by reluctantly dating the persistent (read: stalker) George, who rapidly revealed the monster behind the mild-mannered mask. (Yes, there will be a quiz on this later.) Finally, Lynette (Felicity Huffman) was about to head back into the corporate world she'd left behind when she had her children after costing her husband, Tom (Doug Savant), his job, leaving him home to watch her bratty kids. Gabrielle's (Eva Longoria) husband, Carlos (Ricardo Antonio Chavira), was in prison for using slave labor in his overseas business and she was pregnant, unsure if the father was Carlos or the young gardener (Jesse Metcalfe) she'd been having an affair with. Meanwhile, the murder of his junkie mother - Mike's girlfriend Diedre (Jolie Jenkins) - was the way he came to become Paul Young's (Mark Moses) child. The secret behind Mary Alice's (Brenda Strong) series-opening suicide was explained when creepy Zach (Cody Kasch) was revealed to be Mike's (James Denton) son. When we left the Desperate Housewives of Wisteria Lane at the end of Season One, Bree (Marcia Cross) had learned that her husband Rex (Steven Culp) had died, but was unaware that evil pharmacist George (Roger Bart) was responsible.
